Greek Easter in Samos: the arrival of Spring announces the greatest celebration of Orthodoxy the Easter and it is really worthy to live in the Beautiful island of Samos. In every place and especially at the churches, the monasteries, and the chapels where the soft sound of the bells unites with the chants, that sound in every corner of the island.
Particularly, on Holly Friday where it is the peak of the holly drama, in Vathy all the sepulchral from the five churches of the town meet at the central square and thousand of people hold in their hands candles and the wait for them to arrive. The image is really astonishing. After the doxology take place every sepulchral returns to the church by passing through the alleys of the town.
On Holly Saturday a place to go is Marathokambos in which the four parish compete to the cannon cracker throwing. The sight is unique and adds a different mystagogy in the Resurrection Mass.
On Easter - Sunday-the musky of nature interfere with one from the roasted meat. You will have the chance to see that in every house, tavern, restaurant they roast the traditional and local Samian goat. The traditional cooking is to bake in the oven and not in the roasting jack as in many areas in Greece.
Other Easter eating are the Samian patties filled with white cheese or sweet vegetable marrow, pan cakes with honey and walnuts or cheese and for beverage is being served the traditional shuma a kind of tsipouro!Cheers!
